Hepatitis C Screening...The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has recommended that all people living in the U.S. and born between 1945 and 1965 should be screened for Hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is a chronic viral infection that can affect the liver quite seriously. The 'Baby Boomer' generation is thought to be at increased risk for unknown Hepatitis C exposure since blood screening was not at the current standards during the time that many could have received transfusions of blood products. You could also be at increased risk for having Hepatitis C if you have ever used IV drugs like heroin in the past. It is a simple blood test that many of my patients have already gotten since this recommendation was released. If you are a 'Baby Boomer', ask me or your regular PCP about this screening test to make sure you are Hep C free. The test is covered by Medicare and most insurances.
