To Be Or Not To B12...Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin that is involved in the formation of red blood cells, maintaining your nervous system, the metabolism of many of your cells, especially DNA, and energy function. You usually get it through dietary sources such as eggs, meat, milk, chicken, turkey, shellfish and also in fortified foods like cereals and energy bars. If your body does not absorb it sufficiently from food or oral vitamins, it can be obtained from shots or lozenges that bypass the gastrointestinal system and go directly into the bloodstream. It is a standard lab that I check once or twice a year, so ask me at your next office visit if you don't remember us speaking about it. Vegetarians and Vegans should get it checked regularly since they might be missing out on a lot of the natural dietary sources.
